An interesting picture! What is this rice row about?
This is a piece by Wolfgang Laib, a German artist who’s chosen mediums are natural materials like milk, marble, rice, beeswax and pollen. The yellow material in the bowl second from the foreground is actually pollen. Anyway Laib is way into Eastern philosophies and natural processes, so that’s one connection. Also, I found this explanation from a Smithsonian.com article on the artist:
“Just what statement is Laib making with his simplistic materials? …Rice is considered a staple food around the world. In many Eastern cultures it is also a shrine offering. And the purity of its whiteness and its simple shape are elegant design elements.”
